Mini-Review: Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2 – iPhone/iPod Touch

A cool nostalgia trip, but not that great of a game…

Remember when Tony Hawk Pro Skater ruled the extreme sports game genre. Those were simpler times, where your main objectives were to spell S.K.A.T.E. or smash stuff or piece together the most ridiculous combo’s ever. That’s what Tony Hawk was all about and every kid loved it, so when I heard THPS2 was coming out for the iPhone/iPod Touch the little kid inside me lit up. After spending several hours with the game though, it’s just not the same.

The controls are probably the worst part about the port; they’re unresponsive and feel tacked on. You never feel like you have complete control of your character and that’s so important in a game that requires multiple button presses in a short span of time. The lack of tactile buttons really hurts the experience. There are bright spots though, the entire game, as far as I know is there, and the levels are still great; the lack of the original soundtrack sucks though.

Overall though, I feel like I’ve wasted $10. The broken controls can make it a hassle to play at times and I fell like this game would of been far better suited for a release on PSN/XBL.
